Justice can mean different things to different people. Put simply most people would likely say justice is "you get what you deserve."

Of course, who decides what is deserved?

Consider two people. Each has committed murder. The first person is truly remorseful, and has a full and complete understanding of their immoral actions. The second person knows what they did was wrong as far as the law may be concerned, but they still do not view it as such. Is it not clear that punishment for the first person need not be as severe as punishment for the second?

As to Oedipus, he is the first person. His punishment is just because he understands fully what he has done. By banishing him he is allowed to live, to carry on, but he will do so with the memory of what he had, and what he has lost.

I don't' know that book or situation but I understand that if people don't understand the original teachings of Justice they are lost, because most peoples idea of justice is limited by their own mind and limited world of ideas. The Srimad Bhagavatam will teach one actual justice and Universal Truth. This is the original wisdom of real justice given at the time of creation. (the Vedas are the original how too info if yo will on the science of everything within this world and all other universes and how to return to the eternal kingdom as well. Nothing compares. Without this we will certainly fall way short of real justice and truth. srimadbhagavatam.org/... amazing stuff.

Justice is counter productive to happiness and peace.

You think I have done something wrong. You punish me. I resent the punishment and retaliate. You retaliate. I retaliate. Eventually we are at each other's throats. The same process happens in the law and in religion. Each violation leading to the next escalation.

We could also learn to just walk away.
