I drive the car once or twice a year. Today after 15 minutes of driving the transmission slipped. I continued to drive it and it didnt slip again. The Trans was rebuilt about 12 years ago and has approx 5000 miles on it. Could the transmission be going bad or is it just due to inactivitity? Will driving it a bit correct that by lubricating everything or is this something worse to come? It doesnt leak a drop and is full of fluid
Thanks

Yes..........It is going bad, due to inactivity.

What happens is the fluid in the transmission , as it sits, only keeps about one third of the clutches and steels immersed in fluid. So, the steels are exposed to air and moisture and will corrode, and the clutches (steels with a PAPER friction material) dry out and embrittle. So you start the car, and drive, and you have dry clutches that are trying to grab steel that is rusty..........BAD!!! They will wear out in a matter of minutes, loading everything like the converter and the valve body, with burnt trash. You should have the transmission rebuilt with a HIGH quality kit like a TCI Master Racing kit with the optional high quality RED clutches. After you do that , please drive the car AT LEAST once a month to keep all of the internals saturated in oil.

BTW...........it is a master racing kit, but it wont make it a "racing" transmission, the kit only contains heavier duty quality parts.

it's from inactivity- like the other guys said- a fluid change and a new filter area good idea- and basically you just gotta drive it once in a while. There are a lot of little valves in an automatic tranny, and after a while they start to stick if they aren't used often enough. Another thing you could consider is to take it to a lube joint and have them 'flush' the tranny...that'll force new fluids through the whole system, and some shops use a cleaning agent to clean the gum out of it....it'd be worth the extra bucks to have it done, especially on a classic car such as what you've got

to no longer concern the Camaro's would be returned in '09. effective information, from a pair of you adult adult males. Thro, i think of the coverage deal is a cop out. Being the proud proprietor an 02 Camaro Z28(offered in 04). i understand the coverage is not any larger of a birden than the coverage on my '04 Silverado(offered final Oct). IMO, it substitute into in actuality that bean counter did no longer see the #'s to maintain the production line in operation. have confidence me, the f-physique gang did no longer like this selection by GM to shutdown the plant in Canada. the place the f-bodies have been producted. Oh definite, they have been the comparable value fairly. the backside kind f-physique w/o the t-tops or the V8(LS1 interior the later yrs., ninety 8-02) substitute into slightly below 20K, purely using fact the tangs(somebody appropriate me if, i'm incorrect, right here). that's while to procure into the hi-overall performance and addition of the T-Tops that jacked the fee on up there.

Your seals are starting to harden up from sitting in part due the age of the vehicles transmission seals

good news is that since its problem cleared up after warm up you can do something about it now before its too late...

get the trans serviced and have the fluid and filter changed but in place of 1 qt of the dextron/mercon trans flid have 1 qt of

K & W's Trans -X put in it it will revive and recondition soften the seals and extend their life and put off another rebuild for a few more years...

also it would be agood idea to idle that car foe about 15 minutes once a month to keep trans fludi circulated and seals lubed

I'm sure the tranny is fine. I would simply change the fluid and and filter. It would also be a good idea to drive it a little more often that way all the fluids don't just collect and sit on the bottom of the pan. If I were you I would take it for a quick spin about every month to keep the fluids moving.

its possible it could be that, i had a dodge that i didn't drive much, and it would slip for a few minutes if you let it set for more than a month, and it set a lot, between drives,id try driving it some, you cant hurt it any ,sometimes the seals will dry out over time, and driving it will loosen them up,its bad on the old cars when you let them set,try and drive it when you get a chance to,i didn't have time to drive mine much so i just sold it,you got a nice car there, and a hard one to find, drive it and enjoy it,good luck with it.

I'm guessing you have a TH350 tranny in it and that you are about one quart low on tranny fluid.

You have to check it with the engine running and hot. I'd bet your a quart low.

Might check your linkage too. The metal rods or cable connecting the tranny to the shifter. The rubber mounts settle sometimes and the linkage needs adjusment.

Otherwise, you'll have to throw yourself at the mercy of a tranny shop.

Good Luck!

if that fluid is 12 years old, you better get it out of there asap, and change the filter also.
