To Help the Monkey Cross the River, by Thomas Lux is a great poem. It is about helping people or animals when in the path of harm. However, when helping, it isn’t necessary to hurt the one putting the person or animal you are helping in danger. This poem is about a monkey crossing a river in the search of food, but on the trip across the river, the monkey may face a dangerous predator. The person in the poem won’t hurt the predators but they will still help the monkey.

In this poem, most responses would have to be based off of its structure. To Help the Monkey Cross the River is easily understandable poem and with a good meaning. It is easy to understand this poem because it is not too wordy and the words that are used are common in the English language. A good meaning can be understood very well if the right rhythm is used. Even though this poem is written in free verse, the meaning is made clear with the rhythm created. Being able to see what is going on in the poem in your head is a really great thing about this poem. The imagery is great! One can imagine the exact scene and exact animals with the construction of this poem’s imagery. This poem’s construction really aids in the process of forming a response.

Anther important thing to consider when forming responses to poems is the poem’s content. What exactly does the poem mean to the reader? When a poem really means something to a reader, the responses can be very personal and sometimes even about an experience they had. The content of this poem may remind some people of being little again. Little kids love to play with stuffed animals and many, at an early age, understand the deal about prey and predators. Most people have probably have been able to create a similar scene to the one in this poem since they were young kids. Another thing in the content that might spark a response is the meaning or idea of the poem. In To Help the Monkey Cross the River, the idea is very strong and meaningful. The main message in this poem is to help others when they are in dangerous situations. However, it isn’t the same exact helping as one might expect. It seems to be saying that when helping people in danger of others, don’t hurt the dangerous ones, and just get the innocent one out of the danger. Right at the end of this poem, there is a type of touching and smile provoking comment. It says;

the monkey has little hands like a child’s,
and the smart ones, in a cage, can be taught to smile.

This passage just starts some kind of emotion in the reader; a certain type of happiness about the good people in the world. To Help the Monkey Cross a River, by Thomas Lux is a great poem whose content and structure makes it easy to create meaningful responses.

Your poem proves that modern poetry wells out from the freedom of spirit that is not bound by rhyme and meter. If you feel OK and considerate, I suggest few edits as given below: 'a myriad of prismatic beauties' 'I swear I saw them there sitting on a porch-swing' 'I swear I heard his melody' 'Stealthily I crept across the lawn' 'across a field where stood a barn' I left that dilapidated space to wander into the field' You can further try and craft into a still better poem, but please do not be carried away by rhyme or meter.
