Can Audi owners give me some pointers as I want to purchase a pre-owned certified used 2005 Audi A6 3.2 Quattro version? I'm not looking to race, 'fix up', show off. Just a weekend car that is fun to drive and luxury wise. I know they are pretty expensive that is why I want a used model, I've heard they are unreliable but you can't always beleive everything you hear. I have a friend who has an older model and he hardly has any problems with it, get's in and drive.
So any tips to not get screwed at a dealer for a used Audi A6 3.2 Quattro?
All advice is greatly appreciated.

I own a 2001 A6-4.2, 58K miles in the snow belt. I cannot sing the praises of quattro any louder than I already am. The best AWD package ever engineered and offered to the public. I average $3,000 a year to maintain. This year I had to get 4 new tires ($900) and had the rear pads and rotors replaced ($1,700). I will go in for an oil change soon ($80).
You want to carefully inspect the ball joints, tie-rods and suspension. Very expensive replacement parts but absolutely critical to maintaining your high-end performance.

I don't own an Audy, but used to drive one( A4 AWD, A6 quattro company car), Yeap they are expensive to buy and expensive to maintain, and they are quite reliable. Of course they are not as reliable as Toyota, but quite OK,
Performance wise very smooth engine, and the AWD A6 is very nice, you won't have to worry when entering a curve to fast or driving on rainy weather.
How not to get screwed, well do a test drive, and feel any noises specially coming from the suspension system. While test driving try giving it a bit of gas when entering a corner, and fell if the rear end slides (not suppose to).
Basically Audi is a very good car, If you have the money to maintain it, then go for it.

I have a 98 A6. It needed some of the standard repairs, but after those it has done well. A lot of the problems were in the 98 and 99s. The cars are reliable, but a better word is complicated. An example are the control arms, the car rides great, but has 8 control arms per wheel. More things to wear out or go bad.
If it is certifed you should have X years of worry free driving. After that you are on your own. If there are repairs they are expensive.
As for the dealer, you have to shop around. I mean to at least 3 dealers and go back and forth at least 2 times.

they are good cars and Audi's are the safest and most reliable of the German luxury brands (BMW 3 series and 5 series are also decently reliable) the Audi a4 and A6 are both top picks for safety and are very fun to drive. interiors i would say are best in class (imo) My A6 is the older 2.8 version but it has 145K miles on it and it runs and drives beautifully just keep up on standard maintenance and don't let repairs go and build up and you will love that car.
Buying used is definitely the way to go on any car especially a car that is certified you get a better warrenty and some one else pays for the initial depreciation

i disagree with this last answer, i would only buy and audi if it was audi pre-owned certified. you would not believe what many owners do to their cars that you may not know about buying from a private seller. the late model A6 3.2 is a great car. it definately is not a race car so glad to see you are not expecting it to be. as far as fixing up, i have seen some with a new wheels on them (and even premium audi wheels) that look awesome. its true they are expensive but we dont see many major problems with the late model A6s. The engine is bulletproof and we rarely see problems there. Audi is getting much better as far as quality is concerned. Good luck with your search.

I own a 2.8 a6 quattro and i tell you what, they are fun to drive and easy to fall in love with but the maintenance is the killer. You make sure you do your scheduled maintenance and repairs and you will have your audi for a very long time.
I think its wise to go for the pre-owned one because it makes no sense to pay all that money for a brand new one since a slightly used one could still do the trick for you.

Well, the recommended octane rating for an Audi is 91 octane (high-grade)...it is alright to use 89 octane (mid-grade) regularly without causing harm to the car...But do avoid putting in the 86 octane (low-grade) because it will really make your Audi run poorly (and noticeably so) But since gas prices have dropped over a dollar, you should really try to stick with 91 octane or 89 octane if that is not available But check the inside of your gas-cap and it will tell you exactly which octane you should be using...Also, remember that the higher the octane rating, the better your car will run, perform, and in the long run, maintain

i will disagree with the first answer about reliability. Audi as Mercedes and BMW are among the most reliable cars in the word and certainly better than Toyota... Let me tell you this, my father owns an Audi 80cc 25 years now and he only changed the clutch once 4 years ago. no other unexpected failure. Still since you 're buying a used one, it depends how well it was maintained...I'm sorry i can't help you for the rest of your questions about its cost etc.
