It depends on what brand your machine is. Almost all automatic washing machines have a lid-lock control that stops the tub from spinning if the lid is opened. It can be a small peg on the lid that pushes down a sensor to let the controller know that the lid is closed. Other machines work differently. Your lid controller is broken. This is a relatively cheap repair and if you call around to appliance repair businesses and tell them what the problem is and the brand of your machine, they can usually give you an estimate of the cost of repair. It shouldn't be very much. The service fee and labor will probably be the bulk of it. Good luck!

You can still have a bad timer that times out but doesn't complete the circuit to the spin cycle. This is usually caused by turning the timer backwards and damaging the pawl. Prior overloading could cause the belt to stretch or slip and as previously mentioned, your lid safety switch may be faulty.

Even though it runs through the cycle it can still be the timer. I had the same problem as you. If filled, agitated, and then stopped until it reached the rinse cycle, agitated again and stopped again. I called a repairman out a week ago, he replaced the timer and now it works perfectly. Cost me almost $200. Probably would have been cheaper to go by a decent used one. :) Good luck!!

open the lid look most of the time to your right you will see 2 screws on the lip of the washer remove the screws the newer machines have plastic switches and they break all the time pull the switch up above the tub and press it down in your hand if the machine starts to spin get the model # call a appliance repair company some are easy to fix but some you have to take the whole top off to fix ..

It could be overloaded.or to many heavy article, that when its finished washing the heavy clothes shifted and now its off balance. This has happened to me. Next time this happens, try rearranging your clothes and see if that helps. If the water is going out, then I say check that the clothes are balanced. You also could go onto Maytag web site they have a list of questions and answers for trouble with washing machines.

Years ago i had a machine that worked perfect. then little by little it would stop spinning. I was told by a repairman that it is cheaper and less agraivating to just get a new machine. So i went to the used shop and paid 100.00 for a used one and i have had it for several years now and totally happy.

If it is not a belt drive, then it could be a direct drive type with a broken cog. The 'cog' is a small plastic part located ib the direct drive transmission that cushions the force but also the legs break easily. I've replaced it on my Kenmore washer twice in 10 years. when you replace it, you also want new seals.
