Do you turn your nose up at popular fiction--in any genre? If so, which ones and why?

I am a literary snob at times. After years and years it seems like some of the more established authors keep recycling their old material just to keep their publishers content. I have nothing against most "household name" writers and their genre- as long as they haven't become complete sell-outs. Writing reams of crap simply to satisfy contractual obligations is tantamount to literary prostitution.

As far as genre go, about the only one I absolutely loathe is the whole "romance novel" industry. Pass the barf bucket, please!

In terms of high culture vs. low culture, what is some literature that has these qualities? I'm not sure if I understand that statement. I think books published today are written to appeal to a broad mass of people. If an author writes strictly for the upper class, well, only a percentage of the people will be able to read it and I'm sure that will affect their popularity as an author. Not to mention their royalities. On the other hand if an author is singling out the lower classes who will buy their books? My definition of literature would not consist of anything that has been published in the last 50 years or so. I tend to think of literature as works by those authors that have stood the test of time. Today's books are not written so that one has to become deeply involved in the story. What I mean by that is that the book is very simple and straight forward and the reader does not have to think if the author is providing a deeper meaning or conveying a philosophical thought. I'm a writer and I freelance often. The number one thing I hear from editors is "keep it at an 8th grade level". The majority of Americans cannot read beyond that grade level. Might explain why we are seeing less literature.

My good gosh I am so not a literary snob. I have read a few classics, but my preference is popular fiction.
