It's a funny story, actually. The Lions have done it forever, and wanted to keep doing it for tradition's sake.
When the 1970 merger took place, the league needed another game to balance the TV networks' coverage. The Cowboys volunteered to do it forever ... AS LONG AS THEY WERE THE HOME TEAM. That means the other team always has a short week of practice before traveling, giving the Cowboys a perpetual advantage.

The Green Bay Packers always used to play at Detroit on Thanksgiving, which was fine. Then we got another conference that wanted part of that TV exposure. The league decided to leave one game in Detroit. And the cursed Dallas Cowboys were supposedly "America's Team", so they were given one. It is a definite advantage to have that as a home game every year. Yes, they should rotate.
If you notice, one of the visiting teams is from the NFC and the other is from the AFC so both networks get the advertising $$$$$$$ from a Thanksgiving Day game.

Why do the Lions always play on Thanksgiving day? : Why the Cowboys? For Detroit it may have something to do with the power of radio. In Dallas' case it probably had a lot to do with Tex Schramm and his role in the merger of the AFL and NFL in 1966—the first year that Dallas made an appearance on Thanksgiving day. Both teams at one point could (or did) call themselves "America's team.

Thanksgiving used to be a traditional football day, especially for cross-town rivals, in the early part of the 20th century. The NFL wanted to put a game on Thursday back in the 50's and the only team to volunteer was Detroit. After the AFL Merger, there was a desire to hold a second game and Dallas volunteered. Since then, the same teams have hosted a game on Thanksgiving.

Back when the NFL first wanted to have Thanksgiving games Detroit and Dallas were the only teams that volunteered. Since then those games have become popular and since the Lion and Cowboys were the first to stand up they are rewarded annually.

Tradition. They were doing it when no one else would, so they get to KEEP the game for it. That is why the NFL Network had to add it's own game. How retarded was that. I think College Football should have played the third game, and like 3 years ago I am pretty sure Pitt and West Virgina played the Backyard Brawl on Thanksgiving night.
