Bum earned the nick name by spending way too much time at the White Castle trying to "bum" free coffee off of the employee's after football games, even though he is secretly heir to the Phillips Family Fortune....Phillips 66 petrolium empire.
Truth be known....great grand pa Phillips was responsible for the loan to the Hilton Family....which is why, although she is much more attractive than her wealthy cousin "Bum" Phillips, Paris sometimes betrays the secret family alliance.

I never heard anybody that knew anything about football call Earl Campbell a bum. Bum coached him.

Um, wrong. He also coached the Saints and almost got them their first winning season ever in '83. I believe they lost their last game by a point on a last second FG.
