Well, after checking, it looks kinda like a Arizona Joshua Tree http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joshua_tree

Well, I'd say your right... It looks like some kind of cactus tree (I've lived in the Midwest my whole life and I have no idea what kind). Let the sand/soil mixture dry completely after each watering before you water it again. Next time, ask more questions at the nursery.

I think it is some kind of Euphorbia. Not really a cactus.
Certainly odd. And not a "Joshua Tree", which is a Yucca.
