Although I like The Beatles better, I would have to say Elvis. Without him, there never would have been a group called The Beatles.

Well, Elvis influenced John Lennon, but this is a 'chicken or egg' dilemma indeed. If Elvis had not been, would Lennon and The Beatles have still been influential? I think yes. I don't believe Elvis ever wrote any songs and of course the writing team of Lennon and McCartney is arguably the greatest of all time. Therefore, based on the impact of their music, the writing and the finer musicianship, I would say The Beatles.

Both shaped rock music - Elvis in the mid-late 50's and the Beatles about 8 to 10 years later. Without Elvis, the Beatles would not have existed, but the Beatles were incredibly innovative, especially in the late 60's.

The Beatles, because take away the Beatles influence and who steps in? Nobody replaces their whole scope. You might replace their early years with the Stones, but they led a lot of innovation.

Elvis was just the biggest of the rockabilly idols, take away Elvis and you had four dozen other teen idols ready to take over.

The rest of Elvis' career is mostly singing other people's songs and starring in movies. If playing the same role over and over in movies was that hard, they wouldn't let rappers do it. So no Elvis, you just would had Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash or Eddie Cochran dying on that toilet.

Elvis.........His importance was bringing"race' Music, or more accurately , rhythm and blues to American masses. His sexually and emotionally charged performances, also "loosened" up American values in the package of a "Good Ol' American" boy.

The Beatles were 10 years behind this. Elvis broke the ice, but the Beatles, being they didn't have the American hang-ups of listening to black artists, embrace the raw sounds of blues.

Elvis broke the ice, Beatles continued the "Meltdown" by blending mutiple influences.

Elvis Presley, hands down, John Lennon said "Before Elvis there was nothing", if there wasn't an Elvis there wouldn't have been a Beatles.

Elvis influenced the Beatles --as did other pop artists of the 50s-- and the Beatles influenced most everyone else.

I resemble that remark. You know I'm still alive on an island and I know what's going on out there. The Elvis look alike contests. People paying to walk through my house, even eating the same foods I like. They don't do that for the Beatles.

I think it's even between the two. Personally, I prefer The Beatles.
