2. Several are bird sanctuarys used by migrating birds.
3. They act as filters that pull a lot of pollution out before it hits the ocean.
4. They act as a buffer zone between the sea and the coast. In a hurricane this can blunt the full force of the storm. New Orleans long ago developed or removed the salt marshes so the hurricane hit shore and populated areas first.
5. We now know that salt marshes are one of the most biologically productive habitats on the planet, rivaling tropical rainforests.
