This does not necessarily mean you have a problem. The traction light will come on if you spin a tire in loose rocks or grass. If the light comes on while driving down the road, You more than likely have a bad wheel speed sensor on one of the front hubs. Trust me look at my percentage of best answers.

It means that your traction control system is currently not working. It will light up when you have your emergency brake engaged or when in 1st or 2nd gear and when the car is first started to be sure the bulb is working (should go out after a few seconds if the emergency brake is off). When you put it in 'Drive' and release the emergency brake it should go out. Traction control is part of your ABS system (Anti-lock Brake System). If the light comes on steady while driving then this indicates a problem with your ABS and needs a dealer to check it out. Your brakes will be fine but your ABS system will not engage and do what they are supposed to do.
