A hard drive (as opposed to a floppy drive) hold the operating system, all your files, and virtually everything else you think of as being inside your computer.
With regard to capacity (GB) and rotation speed (rpm), more is better. If you atre taliking about latency or seek time (ms), smaller is better.

Computers contain 2 types of memory; volatile memory which is wiped clean when you turn off power (known as RAM or Random Access Memory) and secondary storage which is nonvolatile. Hard drives are secondary storage devices that store all of the system's software including any files you create on them.
1Gb you are mentioning must be RAM, hard drives usually start around 40Gb and go up.
1 or 2GB RAM is OK, and get a hard drive 80-120G. This should be enough for an average user. In both cases, the advise is to buy as much as you can afford.

A Hard Drive is what is used for long term memory on your computer, such as programs. When you install it, it puts it on a Disk (Not a CD) called your Hard Drive. The minimum that you should have is 30gb, and it is hard to find anything lower. You can find 1gb Flash Drives (Thumb Drives) though. Flash Drives are used to carry information/memory/programs from one computer to another.

sometimes the more hard drive is good especially if you have tons of stuff to store, but it may slow down the compter because of all the data it has to read.
Hard drives are not all the same , there are diiferent one for desktop computers and there are different ones for lap tops(but uaually lap top computers have just one slot for hard drive and that hard can be spilt in two)
If you're on-the-go type of person than maybe a lap top is good for you.

Mr. Linux is correct but to answer the rest of your question the larger, or higher number is more desirable. Also, they usually come in either 5400 rpm or 7200 rpm. These are speed ratings. The 7200 rpm is faster so it is more desirable also. But don't go spending a lot more just to get a bigger faster hard drive. You also want a lot of memory too. My laptop has 2gb of memory a 100gb hard drive which I think is a 5400 rpm speed. I've seen laptops now with 160gb or bigger hd but like I said don't skimp on the memory.

the best hd space for a laptop I have seen is 180gb average is 120 though. The home computers have more because they are bigger and have more space. In addition you need to look for the speed of the hd 7200rpm is fine now a days as this can process data fater at the higher speeds. Most people get external hard drives for their laptops though.

your hard drive is where all of your programs, operating system, and documents are stored.
if you did not have a hard drive you would be inserting disks or cds on a tinual basis to start programs, save data etc.
yes---the larger the number...the better.
good luck :)

It is a storage, you store data on it, 1 GB is not bad but if you want to store songs and videos you need more.
