NOPE! 8400GS is better; amazing when overclocked.

Those cards are both really bad for playing new games. But you could play older games (Half Life 2, Battlefield 2) pretty well on those cards. Im not sure which is better, but I would say the 8300gs just because Im an Nvidia guy.

No. If you look at the link below you'll see that the Geforce 8500 GT with 512 MB is fourth from last. The 8300 is probably just a 7300 GS TC model with DX10 support.

The 8300 GS is not good for games. It is a very slow video card. For playing games I like to see a FRAPS (frames per second) of 50 or higher. I estimate the 8300 GS has a FRAPS of 18 to 21. See web page below for other cards.
http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics.html

The 8300 GS is the OEM version of the 8400 GS per
http://www.vr-zone.com/?i=5051

Misc. notes 8000 series cards:
The 8800 Ultra is about 15% faster than the 8800 GTS.
The 8800 Ultra is twice as fast as the 8600 GTS.
The 8600GTS is about 15% faster than 8600GT
The 8600GTS is 2 1/2 to 3 times the speed of the 8400GS.
The 8400GS is too slow for gaming.

Per Graphics card gaming performance charts:
http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics.html
8600Ultra ($589+) FRAPS (frames per second)=116.9
8800 GTS ($589+) FRAPS=102.2
8600 GTS ($133+) FRAPS= 53.6
8600 GT ($95+) FRAPS= 43.1
8300 GS, 8400 GS ($55) FRAPS= 18 to 21 Estimated

My opinion for a new video card:
For playing the latest games a FRAPS (frames per second) of 50 or higher
For moderate games a FRAPS of 30 or more.
For no games a FRAPS of 18 or more

My opinion for a new computer processor to run Vista:
For non gaming a Rendering Time of 1:59 or less
For gaming a Rendering Time of 1:33 or less (1.20 or less preferred)
