it would appear that most of the democrats were elected because of the nation's disgust with iraq war, gas prices, the economy, the environment...i could go on and on. i am a democrat, a disappointed one...it seems like little has been done (except campaigning for the NEXT ELECTION)

There is a premise in your question that is wrong. The Democrats did not take over the Senate. The Senate is currently 48 Democrats, 1 Democrat still in physical therapy, 1 Socialist, 1 Independent, and 49 Republicans. Because the Socialist and the Independent caucus with the Democrats, the Democrats have the majority on the committees. However, when it comes to the floor of the Senate, they only have a majority on certain issues. Even more importantly, the rules of the Senate requires 60 votes if the minority seeks to hold up legislation. After spending 4 years whining about Democrats occasionally refusing to permit final votes on some judicial nominations and some other issues, the Republicans are regularly refusing to allow final votes on most major legislation -- Iraq, immigration reform, etc.

Having said that, TIME Magazine just released an analysis of the performance of Congress so far. Of the six issues that the Democrats pledged to address, they have enacted two (minimum wage and recommendations of the 9/11 Commission) of the six into law; one (stem cell research) was vetoed by Bush; and two (reduced subsidies for oil companies and additional funding for higher education) are currently in conference committees. In 1995, the Republicans only managed to enact two out of the eleven provisions of the Contract on America. As such, with some time still left in this Congress, the Democrats are making good progress on their pledges.

The Democrats nor the Republicans can do anything about the price of oil. It's a sold as a commodity, therefore the price is set on the future forcasts. They can't do anything about the War in Iraq, because most of them would lose thier seats in the next election, because dispite the strong anti war feelings, the thought of surrender is far less appealing. The only thing they could do about the economy, is put it back in the same dismal state of affairs the previous president left it in. They already signed the NAFTA bill, so the damage has been done, it's now has to be undone.. If at all possible.

I'm an American, and I'm far more disapointed in the sentiment of the country today. I'm far more worried at the prospect of either another Clinton... or Obama.

Because Democrats now only represent HALF of the governing body in Washington. And an evenly divided ANYTHING doesn't get much accomplished (they just cancel each others votes out). NEXT YEAR- a whole bunch MORE Republicans are going to lose their Seats in the House & Senate... -THEN we'll see the War end, & things get done about Immigration, the Economy, Environment- etc.. :) So don't lose hope! Change is on the way...
