My 89 chevy truck has some problems.Tranny always shifted hard and had to be wound out.(Automatic). Torque went out 2 months ago. Had it replaced.Ran again but still shifted funny. Had kick down cable adjusted and shifted fine for two weeks. Went down the road yesterday and when it shifted from second to drive, it slipped and I had no drive. I have all other gears except for drive and overdrive. 700r4 tranny. I can put it in drive to take off, but when it shifts into drive...nothing. Tried adjusting kickdown cable couple different times, and no difference. Minor problem or major?? Please help.

Junk the 700R4 and convert it over to a TH350. You will only notice a slight loss of mileage during highway use. The 700R4 uses a slightly lower 1st gear ratio to get it rolling, you can compensate for that by using a TH400 (12") converter for a slightly lower stall speed. I'm running a '92 Chevy van set up this way, given to me after the 5th 700R4 failed. Let me know if you have 2wd or 4wd, I can tell you what you'll need for parts. The 700R4 was junk when introduced, and was still junk when it was replaced by the electric version(4L60E).

ya yer gonna need a rebuild, as for the suggestion of switching it out for a 3 spd 350 turbo well that's crazy talk, the 700r4 is a good tranny and a 4spd to boot which helps with fuel economy, i had one in my 87 suburban and beat the snot out of that truck in the bush, it finally blew when i submerged the truck in a river and a good amount of water got in the tranny, mind ya it didn't blow right away, i drove it home and changed out the fluid and filter and got almost 3 more months out of it before it died, so i say rebuild it and keep the 4spd in the vehicle and change the tranny fluid and filter on a regular basis to keep yer tranny going strong for a long time.

Find a good turbo 350 and recycle the useless 700r4. Once the torque converter goes on those things the tranny tends to follow soon after. Might find a good one nearby here,http://www.car-part.com/index.htm
