His charisma and ability to influence and mesmerize everyone he meets. Had he not been born a bastard child of a troubled young mother/probable prostitute that gave him away as an infant in exchange for a pitcher of beer, he might have been President instead of criminal.
Axl Rose of Guns N Roses even recorded a song in the '80's written by Charles Manson as he was enamored by him many years ago.
He "charmed" his followers in the '60's into killing people for his cause ( including an 8 month pregnant starlet, wife of director Roman Polanski, Sharon Tate).
There is an old documentary that you might be able to find in your public library called "Helter Skelter" that has tapes of Manson and the Manson trials that would be very educational.

If you read the book Helter Skelter you will understand that this man singlehandedly convinced a bunch of young people to commit murder. Not the ordinary kind mind you, but brutal, sadistic ones, including a woman eight months pregnant.
Being a charismatic person and a master manipulator, he was sentenced to life without parole. Every time he has faced the parole board, he is denied parole.
Honestly, would you want someone like him out on the streets? With today's media hype he would be turned into something of an icon, and not a good one.
Since we seem to be lacking in heroes to admire, we turn to the scum of society and try to make them look good, and even worth imitating. I honestly do not agree.
Freeing him at this age will only make him an object of pity and someone out there is twisted or perverse enough to use him for a number of obscure purposes. Not that he wouldn't welcome it.
Evidently you are very young and know next to nothing about this guy. This guy embodies evil and America is safer with him behind bars, not because of what he did or can do, but of what he represents.
Those who ignore history are doomed to make the same mistakes.

You need to read the book Helter Skelter, what he was able to convince a group of young people to do is scary. To this day a couple of them still believe that he is their "father" as in lord savior! I do not believe he told them to kill like they did, they did it to please him. Had he not brainwashed them so thoroughly, they may not have killed all those people. Some of them were already criminally involved though-- all of them were not sweet little innocents. He is still feared for the reason that he has the potential to recruit new "family" members.

Obviously size has little bearing on what some can do when they are crazed and have power over weak minded individuals. Perhaps you should take a look at the Tate-LaBianca murders and the scenes of those horrific crimes, then come back and tell me there's nothing to fear. Why do you think they've never allowed him to be set free?
