I am a full time college student taking 15 credit hours this fall. I start working tomorrow in CVS. I need advice on what to do and how to manage my time wisely. I usually come home from school for lunch and I just sit there on my couch doing nothing knowing I should be reading and studying the material. What do I do?! I need to stop now that I will be working I wont have time to slack off.

Please help

Thank you.

Don't go home until you've accomplished what you need to every day.

I can't do anything when I'm at home either. Home is a place for relaxing. So I've decided that when I have things to get done, I go to the library or a coffee shop to work on it and I tell myself I can't leave until I'm done with it. If I slack off in the library or coffee shop, I'll start wanting to go home and realize I can't until I finish my stuff. This method works for me really well.

I know you're working at CVS, but if possible there are plenty of other jobs out there that pay the same and allow lots of unsupervised time alone without anything to do. I work in the spa of a luxury hotel, and in a typical 8 1/2 hour shift I have about 5 hours of downtime, just waiting around for clients. I use that time to read and do homework. There are tons of those jobs out there (but not in retail!).

I don't know enough about your routine to give specifics. For example, it would be better if you went to your school or public library (or a coffeeshop) to do your work, vs. home, if you can. Or, if you have to go home, create a study place that is clean, fully-stocked with supplies, and get at the work you need to do. DO NOT procrastinate or you will definitely fall behind. It's ambitious for you to be working and going to college and you have to stay up on your studies. Attend all classes. Eat well, get enough exercise and sleep. Don't let unecessary problems keep you from your responsibilities.

Best of luck to you!

(Perhaps you should keep a calendar/diary for a couple of weeks to spot other "time wasters." It's perfectly OK to take breaks and you certainly shouldn't have to work 24 hours a day...but maybe there is other time you can "free up" and re-dedicate it to work or school.)

I'm a college student myself so i understand how you feel. The best advice I can give you is start on your homework ASAP after class. Even if you can't finish it go ahead and at least start working on it. Discipline yourself to do your homework before you do anything else.

Make a list of what you need to do and scratch off those tasks as you do them. If a task seems to hard, break it into smaller pieces or steps and knock those off one at a time until you are done. You can do it!

Working a job and taking 15 credits is going to kill you.
