He, himself, didnt torture the native americans alone. remember, he could have been pushed by his comrades about gaining land for settlements. he was pretty much a success because he made Spain rich and the top empire for a few yrs before Britain took over. and he pretty much is responsible for people coming over to settle.

He was both, but more the winner
He postulated that the world was smaller than it was, yet had he been a scholar, the diameter of the earth was figured very accurately in about 1800 BC.
he found a land of plenty, and as he pushed westward, he found much more weatlh. He returned a hero as it were, he is buried in Seville (se via ah) spain, in the 7th largest cathedral I have seen his grave, he is carried by stone figures.
I think history will call him a hero, but he was a hero by accident

He was an accidental success. He was looking for India, and instead found a whole new continent. So he failed to find what he was looking for, but succeeded in making the biggest discovery of his time. He just didn't do it on purpose.

He failed to get to India but he didn't entirely fail in his mission to get more stuff for spain. He was an a**hole though and failed humanity by butchering many of the locals in the "New" World.
