I hurt my knee 4 days ago playing rugby. The day I played rugby I didn't feel much pain. I could walk for the rest of the night. The next morning I couldn't fully bend my knee, but I could barely walk for the rest of the day. The following day, I couldn't walk anymore. I felt so much pain. So I ended up going to my school's health services, and now I am on crutches. I get to see the doctor on tuesday, so he or she will give me the verdict on my knee's status, but what do y'all think? What is it? knee sprain? broken knee? ligament tear? cartilage damage?

It's impossible to know the extent of your knee damage without an MRI...or at least a CT Scan. Bony injury is unlikely or you wouldn't have been able to bear weight.

A common knee injury is referred to a "the trifecta" in sports medicine- Anterior cruciate ligament, medial collateral ligament and medial meniscus. This happens as the result of a lateral blow- a hit on the outside of the knee.

In any case, imaging will show what's up. In the mean time, RICE it- rest, ice, compression (like ace wrap) and elevate.

You'll find out in 2 days, probably just a strain, not even a sprain if you are walking on it. Ice and Ibubrophin for the swelling.

If you are walking it certainly isn't broken. Either the ligament is torn or it is just a bad sprain.
