This is hard, but don't give up!! I am also on Metformin, have been since February. My best advice is to stick with it. You are going to feel awful. I know that's probably not encouraging, but I promise it will pass. It literally took a couple months for me. I was so sick in the beginning, but if I skipped doses it was just worse.
I am up to 3 (500 mg) per day and doing well. It took a while but I finally feel good.
Be forewarned. Stick to it closely and don't miss doses. I made that mistake and pay for it when I do.
Eating small frequent meals is good. I have found that now that I'm on this medication if I skip a meal or don't eat regularly I get a headache, the shakes and get weak. I've started carrying gum or candy with me just in case.
Also stay on a multi vitamin, I found this helpful as well.
Metformin has really worked well for me. I am now having regular periods without the aid of birth control. It's been wonderful.
Watch what you eat too, some foods can effect you. I also had my gallbladder removed which doesn't help things!
Don't give up, stick with it and you will see results!
Addition:
They also have slow release Metformin. I have not tried it but it is supposed to help with the side effects.

I took metforin for pcos for 2 weeks and also took clomid from cycle day 5-9 I got preg on cycle day 18, (when i ovulated). So the 1st time I ever took it! Just stick with the metformin you will get used to it after a while take it the same time each night. Your lucky I had to take 3 a day. ( and i'm not even over wright by a long shot) And even took it after I became preg for the 1st 14 weeks! I'm 29 weeks along now baby boy is healthy I changed my diet and I don't even have gestational diabetes this time around. ( i did with baby #1) You kind of set yourself back with stopping you need your sugar levels to be under control not just to help with ovulation but also PCOS women tend to produce immature eggs that if fertilized can lean to miscarriage ( i have had 3) metformin works wonders it messes up the GI tract but you'll be feeling sick when you become pregnant anyway so toughen up girl. Don't whip out now I know it hard trust me I was taking 1500 mg. a day for 16 weeks total. It will get easier and when you get the 2nd line on the preg. test it won't even matter it's worth it I promise! Best wishes and baby dust!

uumm....I have been on it for like 6 mths now, and I see some improvements, but not as many as I'd like. What my Gyn had me do to reduce side effects (diharrea mainly) is to...Take 1 pill at dinner time every day for a week, then the second week take two pills at dinner time for that whole week, then the same thing with three pills at dinner time on the third week. If you start having side effects going up to the third week, go back down to two for another week and then try three pills again after a week. I wish you luck with this med helping!

If your insisting on taking it is because you are trying to get pregnant, go for it and you may want to take an iron supplement with it to help with diarrea. But if you are taking it just to regulate your period then you may just wanna talk to your doc about a birth control that's right for you.
