Well, to be completely honest, it depends. It depends on what type of hardware you want on the computer and which OS you wish to run on it.
If you want just the bare bones of a system then you should go with an OS with either XP Home or Vista Home. However, neither of these has the rich multimedia experiance the Media Center offers.
If you want full featured mutimedia experiance then you would need to either buy a system with Media Center 2005 or Vista Home Premium. Vista Home Premium will cost more than Windows Media Center Edition 2005 because of the greater hardware requirements of running any Vista box higher than Home Basic. ALL Vista OSs require much greater hardware support than any XP box or Vista Home Basic.
Then, you would need to take into consideration what type of Processing Unit it has, and what type of graphics card it has, and what type of sound card it has, if it will have a built in Network Interface Card for hooking up to the internet, if it will have onboard Wireless capability or a modem, etc.
The more hardware and the higher the capability of that hardware will affect the price of the box.
I suggest you go into one of those big box stores such as a Fry's Electronics, (avoid Best Buy, they don't fix things if you get the box home and what you thought you bought isn't in it, but instead the same weight such as bricks etc is in it, yes this occurs. If you wish to use Best Buy, make them open the box before you take it out of the store!) and tell them exactly what you are looking for and how much money you have to spend on it. This way you can get what you can afford, and if you don't have enough for what you really want yet, you know how much more you will need to save before you can make your purchase.
Good luck and have a nice evening.
P.S. You know what? That first answerer is the dork. Anyone who takes an inititive and finds his/her own income to make a purchase, to buy something YOU want is not a dork, but somebody who is going to do very well in life! I am impressed you are finding honest methods of getting the things in life you want, rather than being the sort of dork who just has his/her hand out to others expecting everything given to them, and are simply too laze to get any inititive of their own to improve their lives and get off their behinds and achieve something in life. I am tired of reading people putting down the efforts of others. No, you will not look like a dork with an iPhone, you will know your own efforts earned you that iPhone, and take pride in that fact. Good for you!

Go look on ebay. Honestly dude, if you're scrounging around like that to get an iphone, you're already in a bad way. You'll just be branded a dork with an iphone.
