I have a red eared slider and a painted and I filter neither. I clean the tank about once a month, but my turtles live maily outdoors in a hard plastic pool. I don't know the set up or anything, but I would say you would be safe going for a Whisper filter in the same catagory as the tank (ie. 10 gal tank- 10 gal filter.) Stay above water though, the underwater ones suck big ones. I know this from prior experience. If you want to get an underwater one, which I would never recommend, get at least twice the power as your tank (ie. 10 gal tank- 20 gal filter). The above water ones work a lot better and for longer periods of time. And no, you do not need a water heater unless you keep your room temp like 50 F or below or if you are keeping a 40 gal tank or larger. I don't know what size your reds are, but mine is 9 in (shell length) and she lives just fine in a 20 gal tank. Mind you though, she spends at least a third of her day in a pool outside, but she is fine when she comes in. If you don't have a light, but want on, those clamp on desk lights work almost better than the lights in the hoods or whatever. Give them something to get out on, like a raft that sticks to the side of the tank (I use that and it works fine). Good luck!

I would get an external filter.

I had trouble keeping my tank clean until I switched to an external filter. I prefer Magnum filters. External filters are harder to set up the first time, but they are worth it.

You can remove and clean an external filter without disrupting the tank. This is even easier to do if you buy shut off valves for the tubing.

try putting in 2 filters like your doing but try getting them 20 gallons more than the amount your tank has and get one that sits on the rim or top of the tank and get one for the bottom of your tank so your cleaning the top and bottom also try washing the rocks you have in the tank. i dont really know what type to get ask a worker at petco or something
