Yes, the foam that accumulates is actually dead skin cells, body fluids, etc. It is perfectly disgusting!!
If you're going to use a jacuzzi-- or jetted tub-- my doctor suggested bringing your own cup of bleach. Fill the tub up with hot water, pour the bleach in, run the jets for a few minutes, then drain and rinse the tub out. This rids the tub of all the lovely, moist, growing things that are hiding in those jets and crevices. Trust me, I will NEVER use one of these tubs ever again without disinfecting it myself first!

Most commercial hottubs are treated with chemicals in much the same way as swimming pools. The water itself, if maintained, is safe. The problem is at the water line. If it isn't routinely cleaned there can be a problem w/bacteria. And yes, you can catch things from it.

I've never heard of a public hot tub. Sounds repulsive, I'd rather go in a private tub and know that its been cleaned regularly. I don't have a hot tub, so guess i have no choice but to go in a public one.
Heaven knows what people do in public hot tubs...unlike swimming pools, if you pass gas in a hot tub no one will be able to tell. lol.

I don't even like using my OWN hottub if it hasn't been cleaned in a while! So no, you're not alone in thinking those things are one big germfest.

I know someone who cleans swimming pools. He will NEVER go in a public pool/spa. Spas especially because its hot water (bacteria can multiply, and chlorine dies off faster in the hot) and people tend to be more *romantic* in spas too. NOt only disgusting, but unclean and possibly sickening. Gross. I agree!!!

It's actually unhealthy to use public hottubs.
The heat and the steam are a good enviroment for germs to grow, so I know how you feel.
Haha.
