When I lived in Pennsylvania the 1st day of the hunting season was a day off from school. As a result of this we ended up getting a 3 day holiday for Thanksgiving as it fell on a Monday.

Any thing like that where you actually had school or work off.

I live in Mobile, Alabama, the home of the first Mardi Gras in the US. Schools and many businesses here close for the Monday and Tuesday of Mardi Gras. Schools here go to class on President's Day while the rest of the country is off, then we get it off the Monday before Mardi Gras. I don't know of another place that moves a national holiday! lol

I used to live in New Orleans, and they had a very cool tradition outside the city for Christmas. All along the river, people would build huge bonfires on Christmas Eve to light St Nick's way. Traffic would back up for hours along River Road to see the bonfires.

Our state of Nebraska celebrates Arbor Day. That's a day when we plant trees. It's in April, and yes, we get the day off work and school, and it's an official holiday.
