The Gobi Desert is an arid, high plateau located in China and Mongolia and surrounded by mountain ranges. It stretches 1,610 km (1,000 mi) from east to west and 970 km (603 mi) from north to south. A railway carries commercial freight across the desert between Jining in China and Ulaanbaatar, the capital of the Republic of Mongolia.
