That would be rosin, but I wouldn't try putting it on the strings. I would stick with the bow. =P
It's not actually a stone, it's a solid resin.
It comes in two varieties (yes, you can but nicer, more expensive rosin, or cheap rosin, but I'm not talking about that) - Light and dark. Dark can be used for violins, violas, cellos, and basses. Light is just for violins (and maybe violas?) and cannot be used for cellos. Dark rosin is not as yellow.

No, it is called rosin, made from the hardened sap of some special trees. It scratches off in a powder that you rub on your bow so that the bow 'grips' the strings better, producing a better sound.
