I go to Cornell and bought a cable box. I bought a splitter and ran a line up to my room, but didn't tell the cable company. Is this illegal in New York?

It depends on your contract with your cable company. Normally, they come by the house and have you sign something before you turn on the cable. Or, they include a copy of thier guidelines in your first bill. This is an implied contract. It means that, even though there are no crimminal charges, if you violate thier terms, they have the right to discontinue service.

It probably is illegal! Read your contract very carefully. If you find, from reading your contract, that it is illegal then call your cable company and ask them to split it for you.

It's not illegal . You can split it anywhere in your house.

You can split all you want. You are a paying customer.
