I see darkness in myself.
I see the light as knowledge and the wisdom of the world and
understanding others,
and in order for me to be a, to be a true human being,
I can't forever dwell in darkness,
I can't forever dwell in the idea,
of just identifying with people like me and understanding me and mine.

The end of this passage is the key to understanding it. "I can't forever dwell in the idea, of just identifying with people like me and mine." This passage is referring to the prejudices that result from lack of knowledge, the stereotypes the emerge from isolation from others.

In the first line we see that the author is seeing himself in darkness, however he quantifies the darkness with the second line saying the light is the understanding and wisdom of others. In the third line he shows us that we cannot be whole, we cannot be complete without understanding all, accepting all people for who they are and not who we wish them to be.

So in short, the author is saying that humans cannot live in isolation, that to be that which we look up to and revere, to attain all those qualities that make us 'human' we must understand and accept all those around, our neighbours, whether they be next door or in another country, like us or completely opposite.

It is a very important quote, especially for our time as intolerance on all sides runs rampant. A very good quote, I would like to know where it is from.

Hope this helps.

The identity with which you were born is the default state. Life is the process of gaining something more than that, of understanding the things that are outside ourselves and of truly learning to identify with the people who are not ourselves.

A very conflicted individual is the author.

Light and dark can often be traced to or associated with traditional notions of good and evil.
