expand the brackets
6y-4 - -2y = 3*7 + 3 * 2y
6y-4+2y = 21 + 6y
2y-4 = 21 ( -6y both sides )
2y = 21 + 4
2y = 25

6y - (4 - 2y) = 3(7 + 2y)

First, expand the brackets

6y - 4 + 2y = 21 + 6y

Group like terms

8y - 4 = 21 + 6y

Get all y's on one side, numbers on the other

2y = 25

y = 25/2

6y - 4 + 2y = 3(7 + 2y)
8y - 4 = 21 + 6y
+4 + 4
8y = 25 + 6y
-6y - 6y
2y = 25
y = 25/2 = 12 1/2

6y - (4 - 2y) = 3(7 + 2y)
6y - 4 + 2y = 21 + 6y {distribute the -1 and the 3}
8y - 4 = 21 + 6y {collect like terms}
8y - 4 - 6y = 21 + 6y - 6y {subtract 6y from both sides}
2y - 4 = 21 {collect like terms}
2y - 4 + 4 = 21 + 4 {add 4 to both sides}
2y = 25 {collect like terms}
y = 25/2 {divide both sides by 2}
