is it true about the tidal wive that happened in Tyland or somewhere close to there. well did the U.S know but couldn't contact them or did they know and didn't tell their people?

Within minutes of the earthquake there were many people around the world that knew of the possibility of a tidal wave or tsunami (they're both more or less incorrect terms). But you're right, there was no method in place for getting the warning to people that lived in the coastal sections. It's very tragic, because in some cases the wave did not occur until many many hours after the earthquake (in Africa for example).

Yes, there was a tidal wave last December 26, 2005 in Thailand and nearby areas and reaches as far as Africa. It was cause by an earthquake that hits Indonesia. There was no instruments yet installed that can detect this giant waves in that part. These instruments are used only in Japan as their country expects a lot of giant waves.

It was more of a problem with communications. As far as I know, someone knew about it but couldn't tell Thailand and all of the other countries that got hit about it in time.
