I would say get the wagon. It is still pretty fast, and has enough room to store all of your equipment. I think that you would miss the lack of cargo room in the STi more than the lack of power in the wagon, because if you really, really needed all the power of the STi, you probably wouldn't have even posted this question because you know the answer is that nothing will compare to the STi's power.
One tip that my friend found out the hard way is that, although the wagon handles extremely well, it still isn't quite as good as the sedan, and you can't drive it like it is a sedan.
Also, another suggestion that isn't suggesting the 08 is this, have you looked at the 2005 and newer Subaru Legacy GT's? The have a full size back seat and a huge trunk, which would be plenty of room for sports stuff. They also have great looks for a sedan (in my opinion). And the motor is the STi's motor (4cylinder turbocharged boxer engine) except it is tuned down slightly, to 250hp, which is still a lot! More than the regular WRX. This car also features many options that you would find in a BMW, Lexus or Mercedes. It is definitely a car worth looking into!

The STi does not have a trunk pass through so anything longer than a golf bag is going on the roof. I have a wrx sedan (which does have a small trunk pass through) but I wish I had the wagon every time I go skiing or biking. You can fold the seats down in the wagon and sleep back there. So as far as utility, the wagon is 10x more usefull than the STi. The STi is a more dedicated and expensive machine. If your plans are to go fast (ie: track, dragstrip, autocross, rallycross) then there are few machines that are better suited to the demands and abuse of racing. But if you are not going to race the car, and drive it day to day, then the wagon is the better choice: cheaper to buy and cheaper to maintain; (brakes, tires, better fuel economy).

While I can't make the decision for you, I know two people that have traded in their STIs for wagons on the old model. Both pretty much said the same thing; "The STI is fast but it's a better track car than street car. Besides, I like the extra room in the wagon." Hope that helps.

I went for the 2007 wrx sport wagon and love it. however the interior is pretty *fragile*; already scratched the seat tissues by not carefully throwing stuff in the back.
I did prefer test driving the wrx sedan however. it felt more scotched to the road
4 months later, I am already craving for more! If I was to do it again, I would get my hands on the 2007 STI; it simply looks like hell on wheels. ... and get a used truck to carry the *gear*.
However one car is less of a hassle and in that case the wrx sport wagon is a good *compromise*. I'm not even sure I can find gas with the proper octane rating for the STI in my area...

STI all the way. It's roomier, sits 4 real adults, has better reliability, and it can still outrun and outhandle most sports cars costing twice as much. That being said, you might get better fuel economy and a quieter engine in a Mazdaspeed3, at the expense of spotty reliability, somewhat cramped space, and an irritating built-in-the-console radio (no chance of being able to replace it with an aftermarket unit). You should look into a leftover 06 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo. There are plenty out there going for $28-30k. Check on insurance for both, though, because it can be steep. Good luck!

Me personally love subarus,
Sti model is the sizzle, fast and grunty, head turners, very impressive, depending on the sport equipment u are taking, well there is also the back seat if they can't fit in the boot.
Sport wagon, i personally think they are poofter looking car, they add age on you 10x. Not much grunt.
Now if you are looking for a subaru with grunt, that makes heads turn wen u drive, luggage space, try looking at a Subaru b4 blitzen 1998 models and up..Man powerful car..Impressive to look at.Inside of car is wickard.
Hope this helps,

Get the wagon!!
Subaru is the wagon king. If you get the sedan you will regret not getting the wagon when you try to put something in the trunk. (Like lots of sports equipment)
Also the wagon just looks cooler/sportier and I don't think it weighs much more than the sedan.
P.S. I'm on my second Subaru wagon, and I wish you liked the '08 models.

I will say you are correct in avoiding the hideous '08 models.
Personally, I would go with the STI. Not knowing what type of equipment you might haul, and assuming the STI is similar to my WRX, I have room to pack what I need, from soccer to skis (okay, they go through the fold down cnter panel in the back seat, but still) from tennis equipment to golf clubs....I've not had a problem.

if you make driving your fun in life you will not need to carry anything in the car, so
get the STI
if you value moving things around, then you should get a truck.
yes this means that I suggest that you get a new STI and a used truck to move things with.
2 vehicles is a little more work, but you can actually get the best of everything that way.
