The Mayflower was the ship that brought the Pilgrims to America.
It sailed from Southampton, England, on September 16, 1620, with 102 passengers on board.
The voyage took 65 days, during which time two people died and one person was born.
The colonists had been granted territory in Virginia, but the ship landed at Plymouth, Massachusetts, on Dec. 26, 1620.

In early Plymouth, the passengers who arrived on the first four ships took on the title of "First Comers," to distinguish themselves from later colonists. The first four ships were the Mayflower (1620), the Fortune (1621), the Anne and the Little James (1623).

There were many. Mayflower is most famous, but the Kalmar Nyckel (Dutch) was more successful and did more trips. Fun information on this subject is at: http://www.kalmarnyckel.org/

The Kalmar Nyckel has been fully replicated and sails regularly on excursions and for educational purposes.

(I have an ancestor who came over on the Mercury with his religious devotees. Most of them died on the way. He died the day after the ship landed. I will never ever complain about a long airline flight over the Atlantic. We got it good...)
