I've never heard of this technique about manual transmission cars until I was reading some random car forums. Anyone care to elaborate?
I read that you can get into first gear without giving any gas as long as you let the clutch out slowly enough. I always assumed that if you do this you would end up stalling the car.

Well technicaly if your an excellent driver and know how to do it you can indeed do this. All you have to do is GENTLY let off the clutch untill you fell it grabbing the flywheel and start moving the car. As this is happening take note of the engine making sure its not bogging down too much (if it is go slower releasing the clutch). As it grabs more go ahead and release clutch slowly untill its all the way out. Keep in mind this is not good for the clutch (as it tends to heat up the flywheel surface) and is rather dangerous to do on an incline. And besides all of that the light will be red again by the time you get it moving and you will have some pissed off people behind you :)

MY 400 lb foot torque pontiac 6.0 liter GTO can take off in second gear up my driveway with out throttle and proceed into the garage. Stalling is not an option! The bigger more powerfull the car motor the easier it is to drive. You just drive smallish low torque cars.

it depends on the engine. Gas engines that have no low end torque like Honda and Toyota, you cant!

But my Peugeot 505TD was diesel and I could give it a no-gas start in 2nd always, and SOMETIMES in 3rd, due to the superior diesel engines high torque!

see truly a take carry of while is pressed..the gears are engaged interior the gearbox, and as quickly as you press the take carry of pedal it disengages the gears interior with the engine shaft.. so could be that your take carry of replaced into caught someplace and the vehicle moved away..
