It's a marketing effort by the formula manufacturers to make their products more like human milk. Unfortunately, the current studies don't show any benefit to anything but the manufacturers' bottom lines.

"The present follow-up evaluation of growth, visual development, and neurodevelopmental outcomes at 39 months found no adverse effects or benefits of infant formula supplemented with DHA or with both DHA and ARA."

it's the nutrients that are found in breast milk. if not breast feeding it is best to feed your baby the formula with the DHA and ARA it is very important for brain development.

Nutrients that are contained in breastmilk that aid development. Breastmilk contains many more that formula might never contain, so breast milk is way better, but if breastfeeding isn't possible, these nutrients are important and help a lot.

enzymes found in breast milk that aid in brain and eye development. In formula they are synthesized, so they are not exactly the same, but they are still beneficial. Nothing is as alive and proper as breast milk though.
