My almost four month old son (who was 4 weeks early) goes to bed anywhere between 7:00 and 7:30pm. He wakes every three to four hours to nurse (which is absolutely wonderful since he was on a 1 1/2 hr. schedule for the first three months, he's tripled his birth weight!) Although he wakes to feed, he never opens his eyes. Thank goodness for me, I've never had to try to put him back to sleep in the middle of the night. He will sleep for 12 hours (not counting his 2-3 wakings for feeding). Exactly two hours after waking in the morning, he's rubbing his eyes and ready for a nap. I put him down in his crib, turn on his lullaby bear and he falls asleep. The thing is, he wakes up 30-40 minutes later everytime! He'll nap at around Noon again, then around 3pm. At 6pm he's tired and we go through our bedtime routine. He's a very happy baby, alert, smiles all the time. I'm just wondering if he's getting enough sleep for his brain. He is a little behind schedule with milestones. Thanks!

My 5month old boy (who was nearly 3weeks early) sleeps about that and he is healthy and alert, rolls over but only one way and doesn't show inclination towards crawling anytime near, but he also hates tummy time so that's probably why, I give him half hour a day he's behind due to that, so being late on milestones isn't a big deal, plus each baby is different. He sleeps 11pm-6am waking to eat at 2am, 4am, and 5am, then he naps at 8:30am for about 40minutes, then at 2pm for about 20minutes and at 7pm for an hour. And he was the same 1.5hr eating for the first 3months- I couldn't do anything during the day! He is just getting close to tripling his birth weight though- born at 7lbs8oz and now is 20lbs10oz. Don't worry though if he is happy he is getting all that he needs!

There nap schedule continues to change. 30-40 minutes multiple times a day sounds pretty normal. If you think he is ready to give up one of the naps and go longer, try keeping him awake through one and put him to bed a little later. They just naturally increase the length of the nap as they get bigger. Short naps in the beginning are very normal.

It is normal for a baby at that age to nap several times a day. My son was almost 3 months early and he would sleep for about 45 minutes about 3-4 times a day also. I REALLY misss those days now as my son is 3 now and rarely naps at all!! lol.

Your son is perfectly normal. Every baby sleeps differently and there is no wrong amount. My daughter napped 2x a day for one hour that was it ever. By 2 she did not take a nap at all. Other babies sleep alot. You will see a pattern and will know what is right for your son, trust your instinct's, your doing great. Good Luck!

The baby will eventully work into a sleeping pattern more regular and longer as you go. Our did the same thing until he was about 6-9 months. So good luck to ya congrats on the baby

If he wasn't a preemie, I would be worried. Baby's sleep alot anyway. I think he is fine and he is going to be behind on milestones simply because he is a preemie. If he stops eating, then worry.

sounds like he is doing fine. If he was born early then you can expect him to be a little behind
