z = 5y - 2x + 9

when x=10 and y=3,

z = 5*3 -2 *10 +9 = 15 - 20 + 9 = 4

Write the Linear equation 2x-5y+z=9 as a function of x and y. Then evaluate the function when x=10 and y=3

x = (5y +9 -z)/2
y= (9-2x-z)/5
z = 9 - 2x +5y

2(10) - 5(3) +z = 9
20-15 +z = 9
z = 4

write as a function of x and y — this means x and y are the independent variables and z is dependent. In other words, z = some function of x and y. Solve for z...

2x - 5y + z = 9
z = 9 - 2x + 5y

Answer: z(x, y) = 9 - 2x + 5y

z(10, 3) = 9 - 2(10) + 5(3)
= 9 - 20 + 15
= 4

The function of x and y is:

z = 5y - 2x + 9.

For x = 10 and y = 3, this gives z = 15 - 20 + 9 = 4.

[CHECK. In the original equation, we will have

2*10 - 5*3 + 4 = 20 - 15 + 4 = 5 + 4 = 9. It checks.

It's always good to do such a check; in fact, that's how I found a sign error in my first attempt!]

Since nobody got it right yet, I'll chime in: z = 5y - 2x + 9 = 5 × 3 - 2 × 10 + 9 = 15 - 20 + 9 = 4

Yeah, sure. now they see it and fix it and everybody else pipes up! :)

x=(5y-z+9)/2
y=(2x+z-9)/5

Evaluation:
When x=10 and y=3, substitute in the 1st function, we'll have:
10=(15-z+9)2 therefore z=4

Then substitute in the 2nd function, we'll have:
3=(20+z-9)/5, therefore z=4

2x-5y+z=9
put x=10 and y=3
20-15+z=9
5+z=9
z=4, then back to the first equation and put z=4
2x-5y+4=9
2x-5y=5
or 5y=2x-5
y=(2x-5)/5

plug in the numbers and you get 4. Dont know what everyone else is smoking.
Your supposed to get
20-15+z=9
5+z=9
z=4

I plugged it in

20-15+z=9
5

9-5=4 now z=4

Hope I did it the way that you wanted it.

do it step by step:

2x-
2x10=20

5y-
5x3=15

so:

20-15+z=9

now u just solve that it is a pre-algebra question now

20-15=5, 5+4=9

So z=4!
