You probably could provided you have an extremely bright place to put an extremely large container. Garlic needs lots of room, lots of light, and nutrient rich soil. You can get a clove to grow in a pot but you won't get a bulb out of it, you'll just get a sprout. I know because I've tried it. I couldn't help myself because when I noticed one of the cloves sprouting on its own I decided to see if it would grow a bulb, but no such luck. I kinda figured it wouldn't work. Anyhow, if you have a very large container with a very bright place to put it then give it a try. What can you lose.

Good Luck

You will have to let that first plant go to seed. That is, you will see the flowering phase followed by a shock of seedlets growing at the very tip. It is the second generation and may be a third generation to get a crop of garlic to grow.

Let those first seedlets dry or wait until the plant dies back. The seedlets will have to rest through a dormant season and become dry.. They are grown much like onions. Store the dried seedlets in a paper envelope in an area that gets the effects of the season (garage, storage shed, etc.). Keep them dry and don't expose them to rain.or snow.

In the late Winter or early Spring you can start them starter peat pots or growing medium mixed with Vermiculite to keep the soil from compacting. Water moderately and you should see the new plants within 10 days.

You can transplant it into a larger, deeper container up to about 9-10 inches and wide enough to accommodate several plants. When transplanting use the strongest plants in the nursery and plant them at least 2-3 inches apart. You may have to transplant them again if they are too close together.
