Sigh, nothing like the blind leading the sightless. Theatre preforamces are a ritual very like a church serivice or a football game..Rituals are important ceremonies which are always done the same way.. You may have a ritual about how your prepare to meet each day, Rituals are not superstitions. they are formalized ways of doing things that are repeated over and over. always the same way, like a wedding or a theatre production or a football , basket ball or baseball game. Except for the minor details each one is a repeat of every other one. All plays, football games and religious services are pretty much the same when you get right down to it. The details make it interesting, but they all have the same number of players, ways of organizing the spectators, they all have programs, etc, etc; Rituals add familiarity and stability to our lives.

Theatre began as ritual. Priests would enact tales from their holy books as part of a religious ceremony - the Nativity Play which many of us remember from our early school years is a great example of this. Gradually these demonstrated ceremonies transformed as members of the chorus stepped down and spoke by themselves. Later still people started writing dramatic pieces that were secular (non-religious) in nature and from this came the sort of drama we would recognize today as a play. Theatre began over 10,000 years ago and actors have never fully lost that sense of magic and ritual which fascinates non-actors.

Because we're a superstitious bunch, and we always have been. If we don't do the ritual, or worse, do something that is completely the opposite of the ritual (i.e. actually SAY "Macbeth", or "good luck" as opposed to "break a leg"), we FREAK OUT. If we do the ritual, it calms us down and allows us to get on with our performance peacefully.
