What is the basic difference between a mathematician and a physicist considering they both deal with numbers?

Physicists try to understand the laws that govern the universe, and use mathematics as a tool for understanding and applying those laws. Experiment is the ultimate arbiter of truth in physics. Mathematicians study what can be deduced from a given set of postulates, which may or may not have anything to do with reality. Internal consistency with what can be derived from the postulates is the guide to truth in math.
