The criminal courts have held for years that the right to a fair trial requires the state to pay for an attorney to represent an indigent defendant. However, *most* civil proceedings do not make any such requirement. Some proceedings which greatly affect a person's rights, such as civil commitment proceeding, or a proceeding to terminate parental reights, often result in the appointment of a free attorney, but those are the exception, not the rule. You might want to look into the Legal Aid Society. They provide low and no cost legal representation for the indigent. However, whether you will meet their criteria for assistance I don't know. You can also see if there is a law clinic operated by a law school Most law schools operate a legal clinic, staffed by 3rd year law students. These students assist the indigent with their legal problems under the supervision of a licensed attorney. Good luck. If all else fails, you need to consult relatives and hire an attorney to assist you. Contact your local or state bar association for a referral.

You should have a "Legal Aid" office in your town or nearby. If that doesn't work, you can go to an office supplie store and buy some "Do it yourself Divorce" papers. There is still some costs associated with it - filing at the courthouse, that kind of thing -
You can also go to an attorney and request the fees for him be paid by your husband (soon-to-be) because you have no income. It's not that uncommon.
I had it written into my divorce decree that my husband would be responsible for 1/2 of the cost of our child's college education. His initial response was "we don't need it because you know I'll do it"....I disagreed and had it written in anyway. It was a good thing because it has been difficult getting the money from him anyway.
My first recommendation would be for you to have a "consultation" with a local attorney. They are usually free (the first one) and they can give you good solid advice for your state.
Best of luck.

Go to your local legal aid office and explain everything in detail to them. If they cannot help you, possibly they can point you in the correct direction. You don't say if you have ever worked outside the home. If you haven't, he will have to pay your legal fees as well as provide for the children. Just remember that the children love you both and don't allow them to be caught in the middle of this. They need their father and mother. Everyone is human and makes mistakes. Maybe you did not belong together, but you still have children that need to feel as if they belong to you both. Take care and God Bless.

A friend of mine actually got divorced through a program online. It was fairly inexpensive ($250). I am not sure what the name of it was. They do not have children and the divorce was fairly amicable so I do not know that it would apply to all situations. Good luck!

Call the court house ask for the department that handles divorces, tell them what you just wrote here about not being able to afford a lawyer they will set a court appointed one to you. If they can't do that ask what can you do to get help.

Public defenders handle criminal cases only.
I would go to the nearest legal aid office and see if they can help you. If you cannot find a legal aid office, I would contact a non-profit community organization. They may be able to provide you with names of lawyers who'll take on cases on a sliding scale or pro bono (free).
Good luck.

murder has worked well for some though getting jail time might be inconvenient.
Seriously, plan the costs. You should be able to find out how much thats likely to be after one visit.....Just ask.
Contact any local womens' groups and see if there are any schemes or deals that can be arranged.
good luck
