When Chiyo goes to find her sister in that house, what kind of house is it? It looked sort of like a brothel but I am not sure. Does anybody know?

It was a brothel. Earlier in the film hatsumomo said to chiyo that her sister was working in the "pleasure district".

Yes, since her sister was not accepted to become a Geisha she was sold to a brothel.

The book (obviously) goes into a lot more detail, and yes, her sister is in a brothel. It is a great book and movie.

yeah her sister got sent to a brothel which was a step down from the geisha house, in a poorer section of town and they didn't learn to be geisha, they just sold their bodies. that movie was good.

I think its a brothel, because in the beginning they choose the prettier girls to be geisha's and the average looking girls as whore's.
