Hi Philippines!

The next eclipse of the sun you can see in the Philippines will be a partial eclipse on January 29, 2009. It's a deep partial eclipse. Ninety percent of the sun would be eclipsed in Mindanao, except that the sun will set during the eclipse shortly before it reaches 90%. It's not total anywhere, however. This one will be an annular eclipse in Indonesia.

You have to wait 35 years for the next total solar eclipse, April 20, 2042. Mid-morning that day, the far southern part of Luzon plus the central islands of the archipelago will lie in the path of totality.
If you don't wish to wait that long, travel to mainland China or the Ryukyu islands of Japan on July 22, 2009 to see the total eclipse there.

Tony's comment is not true. It is the Sun that you should not look at with the naked eye and especially with telescope or binoculars. However, much is made of this by the 'authorities' when there is an eclipse in any region because they cannot trust millions of people to be reasonable. The Sun is shining many hours per day all over the globe and people regularly glimpse it from time to time. If you play cricket and attempt a high catch you are bound to 'look at the Sun with the naked eye'. I don't see cricketers reporting at casualty with burnt eyes.
During totality between second and third contact, it is perfectly safe to look - the light is no more intense than a full moon. And use binoculars or a telescope - just make sure you stop using these aids at third contact when a small portion of the sun's disk reappears. And enjoy the spectacle.

Don't know the first par to your question, however, please never look at an eclipse withthe naked eye, you can be blinded. Also, never look at it through a telescope ir binoculars - this is even more dangerous.

Edit: I did mean dont 'stare' at the sun for extended period. In relation to the telescope and binoculars, I meant to say dont look at the the sun through it without a filter. Not the totality itself. Sorry if I misled anyone!
