Respiration and circulation. Without circulation, the blood cells in the lung alveolar would soon become oxygen saturated and not be able to take up any more. Circulation allows de-oxygenated red cells to take up oxygen and give up CO2. Conversely, without respiration, the lack of oxygen would obviously cause the heart to quickly infarct.
