Basically, the plant was around 10 centimetres tall, a slightly thick green stalk with a number of a rather large reddish seeds at the top (the seeds were similar to pomegranate seeds ('Arils'). That's all

Unfortunately, I don't have a picture (I know, I'm sorry). The plant has now disappeared, presumed taken by a cat or something.

There was only one in my garden - the first I've ever seen - and it grew underneath my cherry tree, presumably due to a bird having dropped a seed for it obtained from elsewhere.

If you can accompany your guess with a web linked photo that would be great.

Happy guessing!

As it's only 10 centimeters it must be Arum Maculatum, the common name is Lords and Ladies. It's a native woodland plant, forms a small clump (10-20 cm) and likes semi shade. I grow it in the garden as the leaves on some are beautifuly marked with small dark sports. There is also a garden variety with creamy veins called Arum Italicum. The berries are poisonous to humans but loved by the birds. It was probably the brids that transferred it to your garden.

From your description this can only be Arum maculatum which is a weed in the UK commonly known as the Cuckoo Pint or Lords and Ladies.
This plant grows from a tuber which, once established, can be up to 18 inches underground so can be difficult to eradicate.
The seeds are highly poisonous.

There is a cultivated variety with variegated leaves which produces the same seed spike named Arum subsp. italicum 'Marmoratum'.

Lords and Ladies also known as the cuckoo pint or Arum Lilly. Did it have just one broad leaf behind the seed pod?

I couldn't guess what it was without any more information on it, but if you try BBC/gardening ,you might find it in the plant finder, or you could try the Rh's plant finder as well.

Good luck

Sounds like it might have been garlic. Don't know if it was the wild or tame version though.
