only if you have a septic tank. disposals are not recomended unless you are on a sewer hook up. they will cause your septic system to require much more frequent pump outs. which if you don't do, will cost you tons of money when the drain system clogs up and has to be replaced. otherwise, no, they are no worse for the enviorment than using your bathroom.

I'm really trying to imagine how in the world a garbage disposal would be bad for the environment and I can't come up with one thing. People are getting a little out of hand with this nutty green thing. My disposal gets used constantly as I'm a cook and it will continue to be.

Only if you use it to throw away lots of food because this uses a lot of water.

I scrape food off plates first before washing them & then use the garbage disposal to clear the drain of any residual bits of food.

I think garbage disposals are very handy & okay if you don't waste a lot of water by using them too much.
