What are the essential books/comics/whatever to read for newcomers to Gaiman's works?

I am not much into the comic side of his stuff but Neverwhere, American Gods, and The Anansi Boys are excellant

Eternals #1-7
The Sandman series
Death: The High Cost of Living
The Tragical Comedy or Comical Tragedy of Mr. Punch

Also the movie Mirror Mask is a must for all interested in Neil Gaiman (screenplay by Neil and directed by Dave McKean who did all of the Sandman dust covers)

The Sandman issue, "A Midsummer Night's Dream." It was the first comic to ever be up for a certain sci-fi/fantasy award. He was told soon after being nominated that the rules of nomination were going to be changed so no other comic could be nominated

I loved "Coraline." It reads incredibly fast and is very well written.
