First major turning point.
Birds flying over Columbus boat in 1492. Columbus was near the end of his trip across the Atlantic and would have spotted land within 24 hours. He would have landed in North Carolina, but Columbus knew the birds flying over his boat meant land was near. The birds were flying south so Columbus told the sailors to turn the ship south and he eventually landed in the Carribean instead of North Carolina. If the birds hadn't been flying over his boat at that moment in history, the people in America would be speaking Spanish instead of English.
Second major turning point.
Hitler getting turned down on his application to art school. If Hitler had been accepted into art school, he would have had a career as an artist and he wouldn't have gone into politics and perhaps there wouldn't have been a world war II

The first major event was the signing of the Declaration, the second was the signing of the Constitution - without these two events our nation as we know it would not exist. The third major event was the Union winning the battle of Gettysburg - the defeat of the Confederacy reunited the US. The fourth was the bombing of Pearl Harbor - it drew us together as a nation and was the start of the US becoming a true super power. The fifth is the moon landing which gave the US and the world a hope for tomorrow and also brought along a great deal of new technology. I know that many people feel that the tragedy of 9/11 will qualify for this question but I feel that it is too recent of an event to know if it will have changed our history significantly. If any one of the above mentioned events had not occured we would not be as fortunate or as advanced as we are at this very moment. We also would have lost some of what makes us American.

The asteroid strike on the earth about 70 million years ago. Evidence shows that this led to the extinction of the dinosaurs and the alternate evolution of mammalian species - leading to - US! Two - The emergence of global disease pandemics such as the bubonic plague of 1347/1348 and many recurrences thereafter - or - the worldwide influenza pandemic of 1918 which killed more people than world war I - or - possibly the HIV epidemic - history will show how this one realtes to prior attacks by disease overall.
