1. Unless we remember the lessons of the past, then we are doomed to repeat them. If we don't know what didn't work before, then how are we going to know how not to do it again? If we forget the results of certain actions, what is to stop us repeating them?
2. Where we come from affects who we are today. Those people who came from war torn countries are likely to live their lives differently from those who have yet to experience war. Those who have lived through hard times are likely to have a different attitude to material things, and stuff like education.
3. How can we be sure that we are moving forward if we don't know where we started from? If you for example know that the life expectancy two hundred years ago was 45, then you would know we are living longer (better) now. Or if you knew that the average home had only 2 - 3 rooms then, and now its around 7-10, then you'd know we have more living space than in the past.

Hope that's what your looking for.

Ok:

1: you must better understand your history to understand why we have what we have now in the present.

A) Technology. How can people new to technology understand fully what happens now, without even a basic understanding of what started it all?

B) War, wars have constantly been started. How can rights activists etc for instance, protest things such as religion, in turn blaming religion for wars etc, when wars were around before religion was ever given active gods? Without knowing the full history of things you can be lead to false thoughts.

This leads to 2:

2: Our history is the foundations of our beliefs

A) Religion. There have been many religions stemming from each other throughout the years. Paganism (druidism) which brought along wicca and some others. Also, ancient religions stemmed Christianity 2000 years ago. You can only truely understand your religion (if any) if you understand the history of where it came from

B) Architechture: Without the architechture we had in the past, people would not have learnt how to build stronger foundations etc, thus our buildings today would be a lot worse.

3: Without a past, there can not be any future.

although 3 speaks for itself:

A) All things have a start, a middle and an end. A past, present and future. Humans have Birth, Life then Death. Our past plays a part in our lives and what we make of ourselves.

B) Honour. How can you honor the things which made you what you are today, if you do not know what that is? If you hate what you are today, how can you hate what you don't understand and so on.

History is important, whether you understand it or not. If you consider, 1 second past is history so there is not real present as it passes as you think about it.

There fore, that love you met is history as soon as you meet them, your memories are history as soon as you have them and so on.

It's all just about what YOU find interesting and important in history. You may not care about why Hitler did this or why Caesar Nero did that. But regardless, you still know SOMETHING in history even if you don't realise it.

1. To understand where you came from - ancestors and their places of origin. Why? To know WHO you are and HOW you came to live where you live 2. To understand why the world is the way it is - Everything now is a consequence of something that happened in history. Why? To explain the world you live in and to realize how one thing leads to another 3. To hopefully avoid repeating the same mistakes made over and over by those who came before - For example : A. Starting a war - they are always much easier to start than end. B. Taking things for granted like wealth and prosperity. Those things did not just happen. It takes effort to stay on top as we are in the United States at present.

If we don't understand history, we will never understand the world we live in today. Everything we are is as a result of what's been done before us.

It really is true that what we forget we are doomed to repeat. We need to remember history to learn and benefit from it.
We need to know history to be more responsible voters and citizens of our country/nation. This is true of all countries.

History is a required subject in education to offer students a more well rounded type of education.

Well, if it's American history, that is important because you should know the history of your own country. If it's world history, you need to know the history of your mother earth! History is extremely important. So don't be all snotty and say "ewww i don't wanna study history". Not that you said that, but still.

The study of history involves: reading, writing, critical analysis, the knowledge of geography and languages, and public speaking to diseminate that knowledge to other people.

A good historian tends to be a multi-talented intellectual.
