I have a 87 dodge dakota and it will die when pressing the brake it also will not idle when started you have to push the gas to keep it running. Sometimes it will even die when just slowing down but when driving ate a consistent speed it does just fine. Can anyone help me with my situation it is aggravating. Thanks

You are probably running too lean, not getting enough gas at idle speed. When you are running at higher speeds, you are operating on a different carb circuit.
Check for vacuum leaks. Richen idle mix.
When you step on the brakes, they are vacuum assisted. It acts like a slight vacuum leak. The truck dies because it leans out the mix too much.

Go after the vacuum leak, forget the plugs and distributor cap and timing. If those were at fault, the engine may not run at all, or very badly, but may not stall at idle. It is a vacuum leak, I've been there before myself. A loose or cracked hose, such as those for the brake diaphragm. It could be a leak in that brake assist diaphragm. To test that, pull the hose going to the large metal shell attached to the end of the brake master cylinder, and plug it. Start the engine, and see if it idles. The hose going to the top of the valve cover which is the crankcase ventilation hose could be leaking. It is going to possibly be an involved hunt, but a fixed vehicle is worth the effort. A test solution to use is soapy water sprayed on possible leak points. If it is drawn in, that is where the problem is. The water will not hurt the engine.

Replace the plugs, distributor wires, distributor cap, points and condenser and set the timing. Check the carb for adjustment after all has been replaced.

spraying starter fluid along the hoses will cause the engine to rev up when its sucked in thats the easiest wat to find it...ether works good to
